WHAT IS SAFE FOOTBALL?
Safe Football is a proprietary instructional training and skill development system for football coaches and players. It is designed to increase on-field performance while simultaneously reducing head and neck injuries from helmet contact on the field. The philosophy is safety through superior technique by eliminating the use of the helmet, since repeated head contact is the underlying cause of concussions and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Safe Football is the only program to gain adoption at all levels of the game, from youth to the NFL, as well as the only program to boast proven results in prevention.
Scott Peters, a former NFL offensive lineman and sports safety advocate, developed Safe Football in response to his awareness of CTE. Colloquially known as “punch-drunk syndrome,” CTE is a swelling of the brain’s lining as a result of concussion. CTE not only ruins careers and lives of players, but is also linked to depression and death.
In 2006, concern about football-related CTE began to spread. As parents reacting to the news started prohibiting their children from playing the game, U.S. high school participation rates dropped, indicating an uncertain future for football. These fears were compounded by the fact helmets and other protective equipment are proven to be incapable of protecting the brain. With no cure for CTE, much less a reliable test to diagnose it, this devastating neurological brain disease has claimed the lives of retired NFL and high school players alike.
SAVE THE BRAIN,
SAVE THE GAME
Efforts to reduce head contact by way of rule changes and penalties have had no positive effect on the desired goal of reducing concussions. The only solution for player safety and the preservation of the sport was to eliminate the cause of CTE, which is repeated head impacts. Fueled by his love of the game and concern for both current and future players, Peters undertook to solve the problem by applying his extensive knowledge of martial arts to football. And so Safe Football was born.
Based the latest advancements in biomechanics, Safe Football’s comprehensive curriculum works to “take the head out of the game” while also providing superior techniques that improve player efficiency. The Safe Football technique helps athletes learn to hit by using their hands, leverage and hips and without using their heads. The result is a safer game without any loss of action or physicality for the player or the fans.
SAFE FOOTBALL WORKS
Since its inception in 2012, Safe Football has succeeded in reducing or completely eliminating on-field concussions and stingers (injury to nerves or neck and shoulder) wherever its techniques have been applied, and has has been endorsed by Neurologists for its mitigation of physical trauma to the brain.
“Safe” football is not to be confused with “soft” football. Safe Football’s instructors are all former NFL players who understand the requirements to perform at the highest level, and who have first-hand knowledge of the game, as well as first-hand knowledge of the inherent risks players are exposed to when they aren’t equipped with the right techniques.
The instructional programs have gained 100% adoption by every coach and player trained to date, due to the competitive advantage the techniques provide. And Safe Football also offers certification through its Coaching Clinics, with ongoing support and advanced programs, as well as Youth Football Skills Camps and High School Player Camps delivered by former NFL players.
To date, Safe Football has delivered 750 clinics and camps, certified 5,000 coaches, and trained more than 40,000 players – from youth-level players to the NFL’s Detroit Lions, USC Trojans, University of Washington, and others.
